The narrative unfolds in a non-linear format, using black-and-white flashbacks to show Derek’s transformation from a promising student to a white supremacist leader, spurred by the murder of his firefighter father, which he attributes to affirmative action. Influenced by a local white supremacist named Cameron, Derek becomes deeply involved in neo-Nazi ideology. He commits a brutal double murder of two Black men attempting to steal his car, which sends him to prison.

While in prison, Derek endures a series of events that challenge his beliefs. He befriends a Black inmate and becomes disillusioned with the white supremacist gang when he sees their hypocrisy and self-interest. A turning point comes after he is brutally assaulted by fellow white inmates. This leads him to reevaluate his ideology and begin a process of change.
